VAR - video assistant referee
The video assistant referee (VAR) is a match official in football who assists the referee by reviewing decisions using video footage and providing advice to the referee based on those reviews. It is being used since 2018/2019 season. It's really improving referee decisions.
There are four categories of decisions that can be reviewed:
- Goal/no goal – when there are speculations if the goal was found correctly
- Penalty/no penalty – when defender fouls striker from other team in the penalty box
- Direct red card – when there is a possibility of giving a red card for a hard foul
- Mistaken identity in awarding a red or yellow card.
Where the VAR does identify a possible clear and obvious error, there are three possible scenarios:
- Decision overturned on advice of VAR
- On-field review recommended
- Referee chooses to ignore VAR advice

What is VAR for if the referee can ignore their advice? It would be good to know when this happens.
